Supporting the expansion of a leading European container terminal
Rotterdam World Gateway (RWG), one of Europe's most advanced fully automated container terminals, is accelerating the ongoing expansion of the capacity of its container terminal in Rotterdam. Backed by a tailored financing package, this project will increase handling capacity and help address sustained congestion at the Port of Rotterdam. Societe Generale acted as Financial Advisor and Sole Private Placement Agent on the transaction.
Owned by DP World, CMA CGM/Terminal Link, HMM and ONE, RWG is a leading container terminal located in the Port of Rotterdam. With a current handling capacity of 2.6 million TEU1, it is equipped to accommodate the world's largest deep-sea vessels through its highly automated operations and state-of-the-art infrastructure.
To support future growth and respond to sustained congestion pressures in the port, RWG is accelerating the ongoing expansion of its container terminal capacity through the development of its fourth and final berth for the largest deep-sea vessels. Once completed, the project is expected to enable the terminal to accommodate up to 5 million TEU, significantly reinforcing its position within Northern Europe's maritime logistics network.
A major investment in resilient and automated infrastructure
The expansion represents a total investment of approximately EUR 500 million. The new berth will feature dedicated handling capabilities across multiple transport modes, supported by next-generation equipment and automation systems.
The project includes the construction of civil works, quay cranes, storage modules equipped with automated stacking cranes and automated guided vehicles.
Delivering a tailored financing solution
To finance this landmark development, RWG secured a debt package comprising both senior and junior tranches. Building on a long-standing relationship, Societe Generale structured and arranged a bespoke financing solution designed to meet the company's funding objectives and the requirements of all stakeholders involved.
As Financial Advisor and Sole Private Placement Agent, Societe Generale leveraged its deep sector expertise, strong investor connectivity and market-leading structuring capabilities to successfully execute the transaction. The financing package supports RWG's next growth phase while reinforcing the terminal's role as a vital component of Europe's transportation infrastructure.
