Romania accelerates its energy transition with one of the country’s largest private wind projects
Greenvolt Group, through its utility‑scale division Greenvolt Power, has secured a EUR 348 million financing package to develop a 253.1 MW wind farm in Ialomița County, Romania. This large‑scale renewable energy project, expected to reach commercial operation in 2027, will be transferred to ENGIE Romania once construction and commissioning are completed. Societe Generale and BRD (Group Societe Generale SA) acted as Senior Arrangers in the structuring of this financing operation.
Romania is undergoing a significant transformation of its energy system as it accelerates its decarbonization agenda and works to align its energy infrastructure with European Union objectives. The country’s National Energy and Climate Plan sets ambitious targets for expanding renewable electricity generation by 2030. This momentum has revitalized investor confidence, creating renewed interest in large-scale wind and solar developments.
In recent years, Romania has increasingly attracted international developers thanks to a more predictable regulatory environment, a clearer investment framework and the rapid growth of long term corporate demand for sustainable power. In this dynamic context, a new project, the Ialomița wind farm, stands out as a strategic addition to the country’s renewable energy capacity and one of the most significant private projects currently in development. It is set to become a cornerstone of Romania’s renewable energy landscape.
A milestone for Romania’s energy future
The new wind farm developed by Greenvolt Power will be located in southeastern Romania consisting predominantly of agricultural land with favorable wind conditions.
Greenvolt decided to construct forty‑two wind turbine generators. Once completed, the farm will have a total installed capacity of approximately 253.1 MW, positioning it as one of the country’s largest privately developed renewable energy assets.
The wind farm will capture and convert wind energy into direct current before regulating it and delivering alternating‑current electricity into the National Energy System. With construction progressing toward its 2027 completion target, the project will provide a substantial addition to the country’s wind‑generation capacity, strengthen energy security and reinforce national climate‑action objectives.
The Ialomița wind project forms part of the broader Wind Rose platform, which totals 506 MW and represents one of Romania’s most ambitious private renewable energy developments currently in progress. Under an agreement signed in late 2025, ENGIE Romania will acquire the project once the plant becomes operational, while Greenvolt Power remains responsible for the construction and commissioning phases.
Structuring a EUR 348 million financing package
The EUR 348 million financing package that will enable the construction of the 253.1 MW wind farm is the result of a comprehensive structuring effort in which Societe Generale and BRD are Senior Arrangers.
Societe Generale and BRD worked alongside a consortium of banks to design a financial structure tailored to the size, complexity and long‑term nature of the project to ensure that the project would receive not only the capital necessary for construction but also the financial stability required throughout the implementation period.
This collective involvement reflects their longstanding expertise in renewable‑energy financing and their support for the transition toward cleaner energy systems in Romania.
With this project, Romania moves one step closer to a more resilient and more sustainable energy system.
The collaboration with a group of leading financial institutions reinforces the strong confidence placed in Greenvolt Power and highlights the strategic relevance of this project. This joint effort has resulted in the development of a financing structure fully aligned with the scale and technical complexity of the asset, while ensuring the efficient allocation of the capital required to move forward with the construction of a landmark project for both Greenvolt and Romania.
