Powering the future of agrivoltaics in Italy

22/09/2026

European Energy has secured EUR 234.1 million in project financing for the 225 MW Vizzini agrivoltaic project in Sicily, Italy. Among the first agrivoltaic financings of this scale in the country, the project combines renewable energy generation, agricultural activities and biodiversity measures. Societe Generale acted as Mandated Lead Arranger for the transaction.

As Italy accelerates its energy transition, agrivoltaics is emerging as a promising solution that enables renewable electricity generation while preserving agricultural use of the land. Supported by long-term incentive mechanisms such as Italy's FerX scheme1, the sector continues to attract significant investment.
The Vizzini project reflects this momentum and highlights the rapid development of large-scale agrivoltaics across the country.

A pioneering project for renewable energy and agriculture

Developed by European Energy, a leading Danish renewable energy company, the 225 MW facility will combine photovoltaic power generation with sheep grazing, reforestation initiatives and biodiversity measures.
Once operational, it is expected to generate approximately 405 GWh of electricity annually, equivalent to the power consumption of more than 135,000 households2. Upon completion, it will rank among the largest agrivoltaic installations in Italy.

Demonstrating the bankability of advanced agrivoltaics

The financing is among the first transactions supporting an asset of this scale and complexity in Italy, providing a strong demonstration of the sector's bankability.
A key factor underpinning the transaction was the 20-year Contract for Difference (CfD) awarded under Italy's FerX support scheme1. By providing long-term revenue visibility and reducing exposure to power price volatility, the mechanism contributed to a robust financing structure and reinforced investor confidence.
With its secured grid connection and integrated technical and agricultural design, Vizzini sets an important precedent for future developments and demonstrates the growing potential of agrivoltaics as an investment class.

Structuring a landmark transaction for Italy's agrivoltaic sector

As Mandated Lead Arranger, Societe Generale supported the EUR 234.1 million financing of the Vizzini development. The transaction marks an important milestone in the bank’s support for advanced renewable energy infrastructure.
The deal also reinforces Societe Generale’s commitment to supporting projects that contribute to the energy transition while promoting sustainable land use.

Securing financing for projects of this scale reflects the quality of our development work and our ability to deliver investment-ready renewable energy assets. Strong interest from leading international and Italian lenders demonstrates continued confidence in well-structured renewable energy projects backed by stable regulatory frameworks.
