Financing a key infrastructure for Germany’s energy transition

05/10/2026

Societe Generale acted as Financial Advisor, Mandated Lead Arranger and Hedge Provider in the financing of the Kyon portfolio, comprising 11 battery energy storage system (BESS) facilities being developed by TotalEnergies' subsidiary Kyon Energy in Germany. The project represents one of the country's most prominent BESS platforms under development.

Battery storage capacity in Europe exceeded 100 GWh in 2025 and could reach nearly 580 GWh by 2030.¹
As power systems progressively decarbonize and as the share of renewable energy progressively increases, battery energy storage systems (BESS) are being deployed at an accelerating pace to address growing flexibility and balancing needs. By storing electricity when supply is abundant and releasing it when demand rises, BESS provides the flexibility required to maintain grid stability, enhance security of supply, and support the large-scale integration of renewable energy sources.
Germany is one of Europe's most advanced BESS markets, alongside Italy and the United Kingdom. With more than 3.5 GW of installed capacity planned for 2026 and a market expected to approach 7 GW by 2034², the country continues to actively expand these assets, which are becoming an essential component of its energy transition ambitions.

Backing the development of one of Germany's leading BESS platforms

Against this favorable backdrop for battery storage, TotalEnergies - through its subsidiary Kyon Energy - and Allianz Global Investors are developing the Kyon portfolio, one of the largest battery storage platforms currently under deployment in Germany.
The Kyon platform comprises 11 battery storage facilities with a total installed capacity of 789 MW.
Scheduled to become operational by 2028, the facilities will help strengthen the stability of the German power grid by reducing congestion and providing the flexibility needed to accommodate the growing share of renewable energy generation.

Supporting a new generation of energy infrastructure

Societe Generale acted as Financial Advisor, Mandated Lead Arranger and Hedge Provider in a EUR 440 million financing package supporting the development of the portfolio.
This transaction highlights the growing maturity of battery storage as a standalone infrastructure asset class and reflects increasing investor confidence in the sector.
By supporting this transaction, Societe Generale reaffirms its commitment to financing innovative projects that help accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy while contributing to the development of a more resilient and adaptable energy system.
