Supporting the transformation of the cruise industry
Societe Generale has supported MSC Cruises (MSCC), one of the world's leading cruise companies, in the financing of two new generation cruise ships.
These vessels incorporate innovative technologies designed to reduce the carbon footprint of the cruise sector, marking an important step in the sustainable transformation of the industry.
A fast-growing sector...
Although cruises account for just 2% of global tourism, their economic impact is considerable. In 2023, it generated $168 billion and supported 1.6 million jobs. Since 1985, passenger numbers have risen steadily, except for the Covid period. In 2024, almost 35 million people embarked on a cruise, and forecasts predict 42 million by 2028*. This dynamic is driven by strong demand, a renewal of the customer base, and the growing attraction of generations X and Y for this travelling mode.
… and changing fast
Beyond this positive outlook, the sector is facing major environmental challenges: pollution, overcrowding in some destinations, and the impact of mass tourism. To meet these challenges, travel players are investing in decarbonisation solutions, in particular through:
- New-generation engines, capable of using low emission fuels;
- Dockside power supplies, enabling engines to be switched off in port;
- Optimising operations: digitalisation, waste reduction, better energy management and route planning.
Two new ships at the cutting edge of innovation
MSC Cruises has ordered two new ships, MSC World Class 5 and 6, built by Chantiers de l'Atlantique. Delivery is scheduled for 2029 and 2030. They will accommodate more than 6,000 passengers and 1,500 crew members.
These ships will be equipped with new-generation dual-fuel LNG engines, reducing methane emissions, and will be able to run on alternative fuels such as bio or synthetic methane, and green methanol. On board, advanced heat recovery, wastewater treatment and waste management systems will be installed, as well as energy-efficient equipment. They will also be connectable to the shore power supply.
Supporting the industry's transition
Thanks to these innovations, the two ships will meet EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) standards and, according to Chantiers de l'Atlantique, should be the most environmentally advanced in the world in their category.
Societe Generale was mandated by MSCC to structure the financing of these vessels. The bank acted as Bookrunner, Global Coordinator, Facilities Agent, Security Agent, Bpifrance AE Agent and Mandated Lead Arranger of the Bpifrance AE financing.
"This complex and far-reaching transaction represents genuine recognition by the market of our expertise in the cruise sector, as well as a demonstration of our ability to structure innovative financing and mobilise powerful synergies. It illustrates Societe Generale's long-standing commitment to two of its major clients: MSCC and Chantiers de l'Atlantique." Stanislas de Calonne, Senior Relationship Manager at Societe Generale
