Supporting biomethane production in Spain and Italy
By securing EUR 671 million in financing, Verdalia Bioenergy can continue its development through the construction and acquisition of several biomethane production sites in Spain and Italy.
The biomethane produced helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promotes the circular economy. Société Générale acted as Mandated Lead Arranger for this financing, the largest ever completed in the European biomethane sector.
Verdalia Bioenergy, a Spanish energy company focused on developing, acquiring and operating biomethane plants across Europe, has recently secured EUR 671 million, the largest financing in the European biomethane sector. This marks a big step to support the company’s investment plan to build and operate a portfolio of projects across Spain and Italy with an aggregate production capacity in excess of 3TWh per year, equivalent to the annual natural gas consumption of nearly one million households.
Societe Generale acted as mandated lead arranger in this landmark corporate financing that will cover biomethane plants construction as well as acquisitions, giving Verdalia tools to pursue both greenfield and brownfield growth over the next four years.
The biomethane produced by Verdalia is obtained through the (oxygen-free) anaerobic digestion process of biodegradable organic raw materials, in addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It fosters circular economy and promotes Europe’s energy independence and local self-sufficiency. “Producing biomethane enables us to close the organic matter cycle, converting waste into fertilizers and clean energy and moving us towards a truly circular economy”, states the company.
The portfolio already includes seven plants in operation and six under construction in Italy, which will start injecting biomethane into the grid in early 2026. In Spain, Verdalia is currently building its first plant and will commence construction of four additional in the first half of 2026.
This milestone constitutes a big leap forward for Verdalia and for the biomethane industry in Europe. It demonstrates the trust of top-tier financial institutions in our strategy and underlines the role that renewable natural gas will plan in achieving decarbonization targets and energy independence
Societe Generale’s involvement in this deal highlights the Bank’s commitment to innovative energy transition projects.
